Fire-Resistant Exterior Choices for Homes in the Wildfire Interface

By the middle of June, most people in the Okanagan and Shuswap have checked the fire danger rating at least once. If your house backs onto grass, timber, or a slope of dry brush, the question is not abstract. It is a practical question about what your home is made of and how it is put together.
This post covers the exterior: cladding, soffit, gutters, and the details where those meet. It is not a program guide. It is what an exterior contractor looks at on a house in an interface area.
Most Homes Are Lost to Embers, Not to a Wall of Flame
The image people carry is a solid front of fire arriving at the property line. That happens, but it is not the usual way houses are lost in interface fires. The more common mechanism is ember exposure: wind carries burning material well ahead of the fire front, sometimes long distances, and it lands in quantity on and around buildings.
Embers do not need to burn through a wall. They need somewhere to lodge and something to catch. The field of the wall, the flat area of siding between openings, is rarely the weak point. The weak points are the places where an ember can settle out of the wind and find fuel:
- Vents and openings: soffit and gable vents, attic and crawl space vents, dryer and bath exhausts.
- Gutters holding pine and fir needles, leaves, and seed litter.
- Roof to wall junctions, valleys, and inside corners where debris collects.
- Decks, including the framing underneath and anything stored below.
- Gaps and open joints: unsealed cladding terminations, missing trim, loose flashing, and the space behind loose siding.
- The base of the wall, where mulch, needles, firewood, and vegetation sit against the cladding.
Almost everything useful comes back to that list: reduce the places embers can lodge, and reduce the fuel they find.
Cladding That Does Not Add Fuel
Cladding still matters, both for radiant heat and because a wall that will not sustain ignition takes one large surface out of the equation.
Fibre Cement
Fibre cement, including the James Hardie and Allura products we install, is made largely of cement and sand with cellulose fibre. It carries a Class A fire rating, the top classification for surface burning characteristics, and it comes as plank, panel, shingle, trim, and soffit, so a whole exterior can be detailed in one material family.
Woodgrain Metal Cladding
Steel and aluminum cladding with a woodgrain finish is non-combustible, and it suits people who want the appearance of wood without a combustible cladding surface. Done well it reads as timber from the driveway.
Metal is not immune to fire. It can distort under sustained heat and the finish can be damaged. What it will not do is ignite and carry flame across the wall, and that is the behaviour that matters under ember attack.
Stone, Masonry, and Stucco
Natural stone, stone veneer, full-bed stone, brick, and CMU are non-combustible and hold up under radiant heat. Masonry is often used as a base course or wainscot, which is a sound instinct here, because the lower part of the wall is where ground fuels put fire closest to the cladding. Stucco is also non-combustible and belongs in the same conversation.
Wood Siding Needs More Thought in an Interface Zone
We install cedar, Douglas fir, redwood, and engineered wood siding, and we are not going to tell you wood is never appropriate. In an interface area it should be a deliberate decision rather than a default.
Untreated wood siding is fuel. Beyond the surface itself, the specific concern is the ventilated cavity behind a rainscreen assembly. A drained and vented cavity is genuinely valuable in this climate for managing moisture, but an open cavity behind combustible cladding can let embers in to burn in a concealed space where nobody sees it and water will not reach it.
The response is not to abandon rainscreen. It is to detail it properly: close the cavity top and bottom with vent closures or mesh sized to resist ember entry, and keep terminations tight. Many homeowners land on a mix, with non-combustible material at grade, on exposed elevations, and under soffits, and wood kept to protected areas such as a covered entry. Fire-retardant treated wood products exist as well, and whether they help depends on what your local authority accepts.
Soffits and Venting Are the Detail People Forget
Soffits are the part of the exterior most likely to become an entry point, and the part homeowners think about least. They sit at the top of the wall where heat and embers collect under the overhang, and they usually hold the attic vents.
Two questions apply. First, whether the soffit material is combustible. Aluminum and steel soffit is non-combustible, fibre cement soffit carries the same Class A rating as the rest of that line, and vinyl soffit will soften and distort under heat well before anything ignites, which can open the attic.
Second, what is happening at the vent openings. Attic and crawl space ventilation is not optional, so the answer is not to block vents. It is ember-resistant venting: screening or purpose-made vent products meant to resist ember passage, installed so they are continuous and intact. Old screening tears or gets pushed aside during other work, so it is worth physically looking. Check the fascia and roof edge at the same time for loose sections and open ends.
Gutters, Debris, and the Places Needles Collect
A gutter full of dry needles is an ignition source held against the roof edge and the fascia. With mature pine and fir near many houses here, gutters fill faster than people expect, and they refill after every wind event.
Metal gutters and downspouts are the sensible baseline. Gutter guards help, though the benefit is less about eliminating cleaning than about keeping the trough from packing full between visits. No guard is maintenance free.
Roof to wall junctions deserve the same attention. Where a lower roof meets a wall, where two planes form a valley, and where a chimney or dormer interrupts the roof, debris piles up, stays damp through spring, then dries out by July. Clear those spots going into fire season, and again after the first strong wind.
The Bottom of the Wall and the First Stretch of Ground
The base of the wall carries a lot of risk for how little attention it gets. Cladding running down into bark mulch, needle litter, or a foundation planting is a direct path from a ground fire into the wall assembly, which is why a non-combustible zone at grade is one of the more effective things you can do. In practice that means gravel, stone, pavers, or bare mineral soil immediately against the house instead of bark mulch, firewood kept away from the wall, and shrubs held back from the cladding rather than growing into it. Junipers and cedars close to a wall are a particular concern given how readily they burn.
Cladding should also terminate above grade with a proper starter and drainage detail rather than running into soil or gravel. That is a moisture requirement first, and it removes a route for fire to reach the bottom edge of the assembly and the cavity behind it. Decks belong on the same list, though their construction is outside our scope.
Windows and Glazing Under Radiant Heat
Glazing is not our trade, so this is short. Windows are among the more vulnerable parts of a wall under radiant heat. Glass can fail before anything else on the exterior does, and once an opening exists, heat and embers are inside the building.
Raise glazing with a window supplier or your designer. Ask about glass configuration, frame behaviour under heat, and screening. It belongs in the same plan as the cladding.
No House Is Fireproof, and That Is Not the Goal
Nothing described here makes a home fireproof, and any contractor telling you otherwise is overselling. Under severe conditions, buildings made entirely of non-combustible materials have been lost. What material and detail choices do is reduce the number of ways a home can ignite, which improves its position in the more common scenario of heavy ember exposure rather than a direct flame front.
FireSmart principles are widely used across British Columbia and follow the same logic: start at the structure, deal with the immediate zone around the house first, and remove the easy ignition points before the difficult ones. Your local fire department or regional district is the right source for what applies at your address, and many offer property assessments. Recommendations vary by municipality, and insurers have their own expectations, so confirm both rather than relying on a general article.
When an exterior is already being replaced or a new home is being built, the added cost of non-combustible cladding and soffit and properly detailed terminations is usually small next to the cost of the work itself. Later on, the same decisions become a renovation.
