    Installing Cladding in Okanagan Heat

    By ten on a late July morning the south elevation is in full sun, the sheathing is too hot to rest a hand on, and the cladding that came off the truck at seven has been baking on the driveway ever since. The work has not changed. The conditions have, and they change how the material behaves, how the adhesives behave, and how long a crew can stay on a wall.

    Material Installed Hot Does Not Stay Hot

    Every cladding product moves with temperature. Fibre cement moves less than wood, engineered wood less than solid cedar, and metal moves most of all, particularly along a long panel. The amount is not the point. Material installed on a hot afternoon sits near the top of its range, and everything it does after that is contraction.

    A butt joint closed up tight in July has nowhere to go except open, and it will open in October and open further in January. The same joint set in April moves the other way. The clearance you leave and the way you treat the joint have to reflect the temperature of the material as it goes on the wall, not a habit carried over from spring.

    So let material come close to ambient instead of working straight off a hot bundle, confirm clearances and joint treatment in the published instructions for the product in hand, and back a moving joint up with flashing rather than asking sealant to hold a dimension it was never meant to hold.

    Cladding Stored in Full Sun Is Not Ready to Install

    Dark factory-applied finishes absorb a lot of solar energy. A ColorPlus board or a dark metal panel lying face up on a driveway reaches a surface temperature well above the air temperature, and that gap is easy to underestimate.

    Hot material brings several problems at once. The finish is softer and easier to mark, so gloves, straps, sawhorses, and knees leave scuffs that would not appear in cooler conditions. A bundle heating on the top face while the bottom stays cool and damp will bow, and stacking straight on the ground is the same problem in a worse form.

    Storage is worth insisting on:

    • Stack flat on level bearers, not leaning against the building or the scaffold
    • Keep everything off the ground and off freshly watered landscaping
    • Cover with a light coloured, breathable cover in shade, not sealed plastic in the sun
    • Break out only what the crew will install that morning

    Sealants, Adhesives, and Tapes Have Upper Limits Too

    Cold weather limits get the attention. Upper limits exist as well, and so do substrate temperature limits, which are the ones that catch crews out. A wall in direct sun can sit outside the range for the product going onto it on a day the air reads as ordinary.

    Sealant in the heat

    Heat shortens the tooling window. A bead skins quickly, and a skinned bead that is then tooled tears rather than wets out, which gives a joint that looks acceptable and has poor adhesion underneath.

    Run short lengths and tool immediately, one person gunning and one tooling if that is what it takes. Keep tubes out of the truck cab and staged in shade or a cooler. Check the published temperature range and substrate requirements rather than assuming the top end is generous.

    Membranes and tapes on hot sheathing

    Self-adhered flashings and tapes are the more serious risk, because heat makes the adhesive aggressive and the initial grab feel excellent. That tack is not the bond. A tape applied to hot, dusty sheathing can look perfect at install and release weeks later once the wall cools and starts moving, by which point it is behind cladding.

    Three things reduce that risk. The substrate has to be clean, and dry sheathing in July carries fine dust that no adhesive will bond through. Roller pressure is not optional, because hand pressure in the heat feels sufficient and is not. And membrane stretched into place while hot pulls as it cools, so lay it in relaxed. Respect the published exposure limits for membranes left open to UV, and walk yesterday's work in the cool of the morning, when a failed bond shows itself.

    Cutting Fibre Cement When Everything Is Bone Dry

    Fibre cement cutting produces respirable dust, and controlling it is a regulatory requirement rather than a preference. In dry mid-summer conditions the dust does not settle where it was made. It carries into the neighbour's yard, onto vehicles, through open windows, and into the rainscreen cavity of the wall finished yesterday.

    Control comes down to method and position. Score and snap or shear where the cut allows it, because a cut that makes no dust is the best control available. Where a saw is needed, use a dust-reducing blade with vacuum extraction and set the cutting station downwind, away from finished work, open windows, and mechanical intakes.

    The finish suffers as well. Fine dry dust clings to warm cladding and holds in a wet sealant joint permanently. Cleaning down at the end of the day beats lifting dust off a finished elevation, and nobody should be blowing debris into an open rainscreen cavity.

    Metal Cladding Gets Difficult and Unsafe to Handle

    A metal panel in direct sun reaches a surface temperature that will burn bare skin, faster on a dark finish. Gloves and sleeves, and no laying panels face up where glazing reflects onto them.

    Handling is the second issue. A hot panel has expanded along its length and is more flexible than it was in the shade, so it is harder to keep straight walking it into position. Add an afternoon valley wind and a long panel becomes a sail on a scaffold. That is a two-person task at minimum, and one for the cooler part of the day.

    Oil canning is the third. Some waviness is inherent to flat metal rather than a defect, but heat makes it worse and low-angle summer light shows every deviation. A panel fastened tight while fully expanded has no room to move. Follow the published fastening and clip spacing guidance, let the panel move where the system intends it to, and expect an uneven substrate to telegraph through.

    Smoke Days Change the Plan

    Wildfire smoke is part of a working summer in the Interior, and it affects the job in two ways. Crew health comes first: smoke on top of heat produces headaches, fatigue, and reduced concentration in people working at height, and a respirator worn for silica dust is not addressing that. Watch the advisories, make the call early, and tell the builder rather than at the end of the day.

    Smoke also affects what the crew can see. Judging colour consistency between batches, sighting down a wall for alignment, and inspecting finished work all depend on light quality. Work that needs a good eye is better left for a clear day.

    Then there is what falls out of the sky. Ash and grit settle into wet sealant, fresh stucco, and new finishes, and once they are in, they are in. Keep pails and mixed material covered, avoid opening long runs of sealant joint on a heavy ash day, and shift to work that is protected.

    Sequence the Day Around the Sun

    Heat illness builds through a week rather than appearing in one afternoon. Water at the wall rather than at the truck, real shade to break in, and an eye on anyone new or back from time off.

    Sequencing is where a crew wins the day back. Start earlier, within what the site and local bylaws allow, because the first hours are worth more than the last. Put the south and west elevations in the morning before they take the sun, and leave the east and north elevations for the afternoon once they have gone into shade. Stage scaffold and lifts to work in the shade the building offers, and keep tools, batteries, and chargers out of direct sun.

    Irrigation and Sprinklers

    On landscaped sites the irrigation runs at night or at first light, when nobody is there to see it. Sprinklers soak stacked material, saturate the ground under bearers, wet an open wall assembly, and hit fresh sealant or stucco hours after the crew has left. Hard water overspray also leaves mineral deposits on new cladding.

    Get the zones near the working elevations shut off, confirm it in writing with the builder or the homeowner so there is a record, and check for heads that spray at the wall. Wet planks in the morning are a slip hazard on a site that felt dry the evening before.

    The Method Changes With the Season

    None of this is exotic. It is the same set of details executed with the season accounted for: material staged in shade, joints set for the temperature at install, adhesives kept inside their published ranges, dust controlled at the saw, and the hot elevations taken early.

    A crew that works the same way in every month of the year leaves some of that on the table, and the evidence turns up in the fall when joints open and a tape lets go. The question worth asking a cladding contractor in July is how they intend to handle storage, sequencing, and joint treatment in the conditions the site is in.
